Next New

New media continues to evolve and expand, and it has become a way of daily living for many people because of its power to influence, innovate and change civilization, especially since it stretches into many parts of our life from connecting with family, creating businesses and even interacting with the government. Furthermore, new media also affects every part of society from how we buy products and services, meet new people, create communities, stay connected, fall in love and date, work, find jobs and even how we watch movies, listen to music and read books and how we consume information on a daily bases to name a few benefits. However, even though new media offers many positive advantages, there is still a real and dangerous dark side that has also developed such as scams, fraud, money-laundering, cyberbullying, cyberstalking, isolation, and it has even caused a fracture within society that is known as the digital divide, to name a few undesirable parts that have caused people to question the benefits of new media technological on society as a whole. Throughout our class, we had covered many diverse topics concerning new media both positive aspects and negatives and we even had the chance to interact with the many tools and technology that make up new media in order to get a better grasp on how the current technology works. With that, even though new media is here to stay for the foreseeable future, I believe that it offers more benefit to society in general and because of this, modern forms of new media will also continue to be developed and created that will further help society evolve in positive ways and these different tools will be designed to combat the negative segments.

Because of this, I envision that new media will also begin to tackle a major issue and flaw which currently exists and that is known as ‘information overload.’ This new tool I visualize will be able to streamline all the information we are bombarded with every day by restructuring the information into easier and more manageable bite sizes. However, this won’t be enough because this new technology will also have to be able to filter out fake or junk information, websites, and news. How this new media could look like is a combination of RSS (Really Simple Syndication), twitter, blog layout and google search engine technology blended together. This new media will merge these different kinds of current technology together and cut out all the unnecessary information that sometimes dilutes the messages, reports, news, communication or data we receive by only collecting information from reputable websites and news outlets. This will be done by having websites and news outlets registering and signing a code of Principles, Responsibility, Integrity, Morals, and Ethics (PRIME) with an information database collection agency who would put it into a depositary and all the information that pass the screening process would be provided with a seal of authenticity that states all the information had been peer-reviewed by a select committee of independent peer members and crosschecked against an Artificial Intelligent (AI) system that would further screen out any unknown, false reports or debunk fake information or news (almost like what rotten tomatoes do for movies but instead for online content). All information that isn’t given the seal of approval will be put on a separate section that will indicate that it had not been reviewed, authenticated or approved yet readers can still access the content but are warn to proceed with caution. This will help cut down drastically the amount of information people receive during any given day. But also, the new media tool will have to further take the information and set them up into short bites that users can easily access through a website or app called ‘Wob’ which is short for ‘Word Bites’ and that integrates search engine technology like Google or Yahoo for quick and easy location of relevant only information. Users will be able to custom create what information they want to see or what information recommendations they want to receive and like yelp, the information would have a star rating system to indicate the relevance or importance of the information, how useful people find it and also if its a topic that is trending. Additionally, users will also be able to post comments and share the information with only registered users who also want to receive the same information and users can further verify that the information is accurate through civilian journalism or independent research and they can add the information (similar to Wiki) and users can even flag, remove the false information or report anything that seems suspicious so it can be taken down by the moderator. All the gathered information will be set in a timeline page layout with the most recent and current being placed first and on top (like a blog post). But the posted information will only consist of the article title and a one-sentence outline of the information with a link embedded into the text so users can directly access more of the information and decide if they want to further read or ignore the information and avoid being bogged down with too much text all at ones and they can easily remove anything that doesn't interest them from their feed. The information will also be placed on a calendar chart so that anyone can go to any particular date on the calendar to see all the information that was posted for that particular day or year and they can flag and save the information to read it at another time but also anyone else can view the information calendar. Subsequently, the site will allow users to create small communities where they can discuss or debate the topic or information in a safe and secure environment free from harassment, cyberbullying or people posting fake information (like a book club). This will help dramatically cut down on the information clutter and ensure that the information is factually checked. There also won't be any kind of advertisement or popups since it will be a paid subscription similar to how the NewYork Times is setup where they offer a limited amount of free content per month but if you subscribe you can read unlimited amounts of articles. Finally, the information can also be converted into audio, where the information is converted from text to podcast audio formate.

As we have seen new media is the rebirth of what is considered old media and it has in essence improved what already currently exists by making it more widespread and easier to use and access through technology. My new media idea also falls within these parameters by infusing current new media together to create something different and new but more functional and user-friendly that can help manage, reorganize, simplify and streamline the information overload we are facing today.

P2P (Peer to Peer)

Over the years the utility and function of the internet have expanded which has allowed online users the ability to take advantage of new media technology for a variety of tasks, purposes, and reasons. Additionally, for most online users it’s a great place for gathering important information, posting comments, opinions, reviews and doing research. Even more, it has also become the main place for entertainment for many people who enjoy playing games, listening to music, watching movies or even reading books to name a few actives that are now being done online. Furthermore, with the low cost of technology and the increased power of broadband, the internet has become more widespread across the globe, giving people in many remote locations access to the world outside of their local communities. However, it has also become a double-edged sword for artists, publishers, and studios when customers and users feel that they no longer want to pay for the content or be bounded by any form of contract, terms or limitations. This is why more people are using Peer to Peer file sharing and other different kinds of modern file-sharing platforms and technology.

What is file-sharing? In the article titled ‘P2P File Sharing’ by James King (2016), he had stated that “File Sharing is a sharing and transmitting computer data in a network or internet with various access levels. Through file sharing, one can access and transmit data from one computer to another, making it efficient for the users to work on documents regardless of their location or computer access” (para. 1).

While Peer-to-Peer or P2P file-sharing means the distribution of software, programs, and digital content like electronic books, files, and multimedia such as music, movies, video clips, and even games through either a direct connection between two peers or over a P2P network with the use of a client software which allows a computer to get connected to the network that searches and locates computers that have the file that the user want without the assistance or interference of a central server (Tiwari, 2016, para. 1).

Classic client-server distribution vs. BitTorrent distribution

There are a few types of P2P filesharing technology such as Gnutella which allows a computer to connect to the network and send out a request for a file that an individual wants to download and when the software locates the computer that has the particular file that an individual wants them can download it to their own personal computer (King, 2016, para 1). Another even more popular and successful peer-to-peer filesharing program with more than 20 million application downloads in 2005, is BitTorrent which was created by Bram Cohen (Thompson, 2005, para. 2). In the article ‘The BitTorrent Effect’ by Clive Thompson (2005), he had said that “BitTorrent lets users quickly upload and download enormous amounts of data, files that are hundreds or thousands of times bigger than a single MP3” (para. 2). Even though it was intended as an open source project that was designed for programmers to inexpensively swap Linux software online, it is now mainly being used for sharing TV shows, movies, and even games and where they can be downloaded in minutes instead of hours (Thompson, 2005, para. 2).
Currently, on the Wikipedia page BitTorrent (2019) the contributors have stated that “As of 2013, BitTorrent has 15–27 million concurrent users at any time. As of January 2012, BitTorrent is utilized by 150 million active users. Based on this figure, the total number of monthly BitTorrent users maybe estimated to more than a quarter of a billion” (para. 5). BitTorrent is a communication protocol for peer-to-peer file sharing but to send or receive files, an individual uses a BitTorrent client on their Internet-connected computer where the client computer program then implements the BitTorrent protocol (Wikipedia, 2019, para. 3). Some of the more popular BitTorrent clients include μTorrent, Xunlei, Transmission, qBittorrent, Vuze, Deluge, BitComet and Tixati and also BitTorrent trackers provide a list of files available for transfer that allow the client to find peer users who transfer the files (Wikipedia, 2019, para. 3).

The ugly side of P2P filesharing technology is that it has become a treasure trove for online piracy which was one of the main causes for the collapse in the music industry and which are now having a major impact on the movie and gaming industry as well. In the article titled ‘Digital Pirates Winning Battle with Studios’ by Brian Stelter and Brad Stone (2009) they have said that the movie industry was now having its Napster moment which had crippled the music industry and as they have stated “the culprits, in this case, are the anonymous pirates who put the film online and enabled millions of Internet users to view it. Because of widely available broadband access and a new wave of streaming sites, it has become surprisingly easy to watch pirated video online — a troubling development for entertainment executives and copyright lawyers” (para. 3). For this reason, as Thompson (2005) had pointed out that with so much illegal trafficking of movies, it's no surprise that the Motion Picture Association of America began clamping down by suing downloaders of movies in order to avoid the fate of the music industry" (para. 3).

Wiki So Far

My involvement in our class Wiki project had started with my contribution within the YouTube page by first supplementing in the discussion on YouTube Red where I had added updates to the information on the service.

Following this, I also added two new additional contributions which were first YouTube Premium, which is the newer service they are offering that had replaced YouTube Red and combined other services, but it isn’t a dedicated music streaming platform, that is why YouTube also offers YouTube music.  Still, YouTube Premium offers many of the same benefits as YouTube Red but also has a number of extra benefits to improve YouTube users experience such as original content and ad-free YouTube streaming.

The second addition was YouTube Music which is a separate paid service similar to Apple Music, Spotify, or Pandora and that allows subscribers to stream a wide library of music and explore new releases. Finally, with these entries, I had also added supplementary images and references.

Afterward, I had then created an entirely new Wiki page titled Vlogging in which I discuss what are Vlogs, the history of Vlogs, the term Vloggers, the popularity of Vlogging, the different kinds of Vlogging platforms, Vlogging categories and most popular Vloggers.  Within my contributions I had also added references information and added images to highlight the information. Vlogs are an important addition because it is the sister version of Blogs, a topic we have been covering and the platform we are widely using with our class discussions. Vlogs are a kind of Blog but its where most or all of the content medium is in video format rather than written text or image entries and it’s also, a topic that gets lost within YouTube which is one of the more popular and commonly used Vlogging platform.

I hope my contribution to the Wiki page this semester has been both beneficial and helpful.
But I will also further continue to add to other Wiki pages in the coming weeks by reviewing and editing or adding to other Wiki pages.
